When a deadly virus had the world in its grip two years ago, scientists were faced with an uphill task of finding a vaccine — and fast. A team of gritty virologists at Oxford University and drug maker AstraZeneca took on the task. They could have got waylaid into a maze, or emerge as saviours, but the uncertainties and risks did not hold them back. Before the year was out, it was clear their work would help rein in the rampaging virus.
